Why did Nixon inherit a large federal deficit from Lyndon Johnson?

There was a huge deficit from LBJ's administration b/c of the Vietnam War. The war cost America billions of dollars - one of the many reasons why the current situation in Iraq has been shown in similar light as the Vietnam War.
