Hamilton-Jacobi theory?

I've heard about congruences of curves and geodesically equidistant hyper surfaces, but i can't figure out what it's all about ! How exactly do we use Hamilton - Jacobi to solve problems(specifically in mechanics, pendulums etc) and why does it work ?!! Not the easiest question, but would really appreciate some insight into this method.
