Usually statistics are merely generalizations. They're good for giving people an idea of what is going on, but it's hardly absolute. A good example is the statistic that 85% of America believes "in god". And that 15% doesn't. If you break it down though, you'll find that a lot of that 15% "non-religious" actually does believe in some sort of god(s), they just don't care for organized religion. So yes, it is false to take statistics as an absolute.
